Departments of Aviation / Operational Counts

In today’s airport environment accurate aircraft movement accountability is essential and State and Federal agencies have all requested improvement in operational counts.

According to the Transportation Research Board’s (TRB) study titled “Evaluating Methods for Counting Aircraft Operations at Non-Towered Airports (ACRP Report 129),” aircraft counting technology is in desperate need of an update.

This research tested the efficiency, accuracy and cost of 7 different airplane counting methods, using techniques of statistical extrapolation and counting devices from acoustical counters to video cameras.

Ultimately, the TRB found that statistical extrapolation and acoustical counting methods often provided unreliable counts.

Video-Based methods were found to be the most accurate. However, they were either non-automated and very labor intensive (by filtering through pictures), or automated but very expensive, non-portable and complex to install and operate.
